Meet PenPal Star Matt, a Grade 7 student from South Africa! Matt and his classmates recently participated in two PenPal Schools topics, World Explorer and Plant & Animal Adaptation. In World Explorer, Matt and his classmates studied life, food, history, and popular culture in communities around the world while sharing perspectives about life in South Africa. Matt explained that learning about the world with PenPals was a great experience because, “you get people's opinions, the things they have seen and what other people do. You can get different opinions, learn about different things in the world and learn other people's interests.” During this topic, Matt decided to create a field trip project to Pilanesberg National Park to help students from around the world learn about a popular tourist site in South Africa. In the Plant & Animal Adaptation topic, Matt and his classmates compared the flora and fauna found in South Africa with plants and animals from communities around the world! In this topic, Matt explained that, “South Africa's wildlife population is growing because we have private game farms with anti-poaching groups. The private game farmers breed up the animals that have a small population. I would say South Africa's wildlife population is rising.” When not learning with PenPals from around the world, Matt enjoys playing club cricket, riding his bike, spending time outdoors, and swimming. When asked where he would travel if he could go anywhere in the world Matt explained, “Australia because I would like to see the Barrier Reef and visit Bondi Beach.” Thanks for being a great PenPal, Matt! Meet PenPal Star Sophia, a 6th Grade student from the United States! Sophia and her classmates recently participated in World Explorer where they compared life, food, art, and popular culture in communities around the world! Sophia explained that her favorite collaborative lessons from World Explorer were the lessons on food and art. Sophia believes that it’s important for young people to learn about the world “so that we're more worldly and aware of what's going on in other places.” In her PenPal project, Sophia curated a presentation about fashion in countries around the world. After sharing facts about fashion in Brazil, China, and South Africa, Sophia presents her peers with a brief quiz to help PenPals see just how much they know about world fashion! In addition to studying art with peers from around the world, Sophia enjoys her language arts class where she enjoys writing stories. After school Sophia enjoys drawing, playing on her ipad, and spending time with her dogs. If she could travel anywhere in the world, Sophia explains, “I would love to visit Japan, because of the shining colors and the food. Plus I hear the people of Japan are very social.” When asked what advice she has for other students to help them be great PenPals, Sophia explains, “Be open and accepting of the differences in everybody's life around the world.” Thanks for being a PenPal Star, Sophia!
